San Jose and surrounding areas are home to multiple species of mole. These creatures can wreak havoc on local residents and businesses attempting to maintain or achieve beautiful and effective landscapes. Is it Moles?

If your grass or garden is dying unexplainably and/or you notice small mounds of dirt appearing throughout your lawn, you could have moles. At first glance, one could confuse a mole with a rat or a mouse. However, upon closer inspection, it would seem as though this “rat” was lacking eyes and ears. Because moles normally live underground and do not utilize sight or sound as much as their other senses, there is need no need for large eyes and ears; they are almost invisible to the naked eye. Another distinguishing feature of a mole is their large front paws which are essential for the amount of time and energy used for digging.

Common Mole Damage — Should I be Worried?

  • Dead or Dying Grass
  • Soft and Unsteady Ground
  • Small Mounds of Dirt
  • Raised Ground in Trails Around Yard

Although moles pose minimal risk to the safety of humans, they can be devastating to lawns and landscapes that have required considerable time and money to establish. Moles create feeding tunnels back and forth in order to catch and eat grubs and earthworms. When this happens under lawns and gardens, root systems become exposed which can create irreversible damage. Because moles can dig up to 15 feet per hour, it is important to remove them from the environment as quick as possible to avoid unnecessary harm to your property.
